Sinaloa Face Mask
The ‘Pacola’ dance depicts a hunting scene and has its roots in pre Spanish colonisation. The inhabitants of the Sinaloa region were dependant on hunting and used this type of dance to communicate to the animals about why they needed to kill them. A cross is always painted on the forehead to give protection from Catholic priests. Made from wood with patterns carved into the face, by the 1950s makers were simply painting on designs. The eyebrows and beard are created by inserting goat hair into small holes.
Height of original mask, 35 cm.
