Wayana Helmet Mask

This Amazonian mask represents the ‘Spirit of Place’ from Wayana, Brazil. The framework is made of wood with decorations in wax, leather and raffia. The indigenous population, for many centuries has worn masks of this type. This social mask displays a careful management of self-identity, worn to hide one's true feelings. Coupled with a value on taciturnity and the reluctance to express emotions verbally, this is a construction of a ‘public face’.
